Empowering Women in Tigray
Introduction
Communities in Tigray, Ethiopia, continue to face enormous challenges following years of conflict. Homes have been destroyed, livelihoods disrupted, and families have displaced. Among the hardest hit are women and widows, many of whom relied on honey production for income and food security.
The Honey Production Initiative empowers 120 women by providing the tools, training, and resources needed to restore honey production as a sustainable livelihood. By distributing 240 beehives, this project supports economic recovery, fosters resilience, restores hope, and strengthens community well-being.
Why Your Support Matters
Conflict has left these women with few opportunities to rebuild their lives. Honey production, once a thriving local practice, can serve as a lifeline—providing income, restoring independence, and offering a sense of purpose.
Your support will:
- Help women regain financial independence
- Promote emotional and mental well-being by giving women a renewed sense of purpose
- Preserve cultural traditions while building sustainable livelihoods
Together, we can provide a solution that empowers women economically, emotionally, and socially.
Project Goals
Economic Recovery
- Distribute 240 beehives to 120 beneficiaries, enabling them to regain a source of income through honey production
- Empower women, widows, and displaced families with the skills and tools needed to thrive in the beekeeping industry
Community Resilience
- Foster a sense of community and collective healing through the shared effort of rebuilding livelihoods
- Promote mental health and stability by offering individuals a renewed sense of purpose through beekeeping
Sustainable Livelihoods
- Provide training in sustainable beekeeping practices, ensuring long-term success and environmental sustainability
- Revitalize traditional beekeeping practices, creating opportunities for local markets and businesses
This project supports production and distribution of 240 beehives, procurement of tools and protective equipment, and training programs on sustainable beekeeping, honey extraction, and hive management. It also covers labor, transportation, and marketing support to ensure honey products reach local and regional markets effectively.
The Impact of Your Support
- Economic Empowerment: Each beneficiary can earn approximately 45,000 birr per year per beehive, providing stable income for families
- Community Healing: Restoring livelihoods also restores dignity and purpose, improving mental and emotional well-being
- Local Economic Growth: Increased honey production stimulates the local economy, creates jobs, and strengthens the supply chain
- Cultural Revitalization: Preserves the heritage of beekeeping and fosters pride in local traditions
How You Can Help

Together, just like bees rebuild their hives after a storm, we can help these communities rebuild their lives-one beehive at a time.
