Reviving Hope: A Borehole Initiative to End Wolkite’s Water Crisis 

Introduction 

Wolkite, the capital of the Gurage zone, is a town of over 70,000 residents facing a critical water shortage. With unreliable water sources and delayed infrastructure projects, the community has been left without a dependable solution. This situation has escalated tensions, resulting in violent protests as residents demand immediate action from local authorities. Despite promises of a water drilling project, the crisis persists, and people continue to suffer without access to clean drinking water. 

The effects of this crisis go beyond thirst. Health, hygiene, and livelihoods are all severely impacted. Without clean water, households cannot maintain proper sanitation, local businesses are suffering, and the community’s overall well-being is in decline. The need for a sustainable, long-term solution has never been more urgent. Furthermore, the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia has only worsened the situation, with resources stretched thin and local authorities unable to implement promised solutions like the water drilling project.

Project Goals: Bringing Clean Water and Peace 

The goal of this project is to construct four boreholes in strategic locations across the community, providing clean, safe drinking water for more than 20,000 individuals in the most affected areas. This project will: 

• Construct Four Boreholes: Boreholes will be placed in areas most affected by water scarcity, ensuring access to clean and sustainable water for 20,000 people. 

• Health and Sanitation Education: Hygiene education will be provided alongside the boreholes, promoting proper sanitation practices and reducing the spread of waterborne diseases. 

• Local Ownership and Sustainability: Local community members will be trained to manage and maintain the boreholes, ensuring long-term sustainability and empowering the residents to take ownership of their water supply. 

• Addressing Conflict-Related Challenges: This project aims to alleviate one of the primary grievances fueling violent protests over water scarcity. By providing access to clean water, tensions can be reduced, creating a more peaceful and stable environment. 

Project Cost 

This proposal seeks to raise $640,000 to fund the construction of four boreholes, providing the town with a stable and safe water supply. Your support will directly improve the health, stability, and opportunities for these people.
